RESIDENTIAL
Stepping Stone provides accommodation for six adolescents
(14-18 years) in the rambling white house near Dulwich
Hill station. They have experienced emotional, physical
and/or sexual abuse and bear the results of neglect,
drugs and poverty and through no fault of their own
find themselves homeless. They have to deal with racism,
violence, abortion, gaol, depression, mental health
problems and attempted suicide.
For 24 hours, 7 days a week our highly trained and
dedicated staff provide case management – assessing
the total needs of each resident. With the assistance
of schools they assess the educational needs and provide
remedial help. They provide vocational guidance and
preparation for job applications. They teach social
and living skills including personal care, hygiene,
household budgeting, nutrition and cooking. This program
is about recognising the needs of teenagers and assisting
them to reintegrate into mainstream society through
education and employment. They are required to go to
school or TAFE or find a job and abide by the house
rules which involves doing their chores, being home
on time and participating in group activities. No
drugs or alcohol are allowed.
Independent Living Program (ILP)
This program in a property nearby enables young people
to receive ongoing support, without the direct 24 hour
supervision of staff and to embrace the changes and
developments they have made while living at Stepping
Stone. A case manager from Stepping Stone monitors
their progress to independence.
Aftercare
There is ongoing support for ex-residents with a
constant contact network enabling them to seek advice
or even reside again briefly, in a crisis.
